Oman Getaway - The Beautiful Middle Eastern Jewel

Oman's starlit skies seem made for the Arabian Nights story tales. The country's landscape flows from imposing mountains to ever-shifting dunes to sandy beaches along a pristine coastline. On one hand, you'll see majestic forts dating back from the 16th century and on the other, you'll visit Muscat's bustling souks. It’s the perfect blend of Arabia's modern spirit and ancient soul.

Much of Oman is sparsely populated making it a country best visited as part of a guided tour group. So, what can you expect to see taking a Oman holiday package?

The Charming Capital City of Muscat
Most Oman tour packages begin in Muscat. The city’s skyline is made up of low-rise whitewashed buildings punctuated by the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. While the exterior is all about architecture, the interiors feature intricate mosaics, a massive crystal chandelier and a rug that took 4 years to be woven.

The Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts overlook Muscat’s walled Old Town and its winding market lanes. Some of the old homes have been restored into charming museums and courtyard restaurants. There’s also the Royal Opera House where you can watch thrilling theatrical performances.

The Mutrah Corniche Promenade
Once the country’s main port for maritime spice trade, this 2km corniche is now home to His Majesty’s dhow and assorted seafaring vessels. The Mutrah Souq with shops of frankincense, pashminas, oud and handmade goods is one of the oldest markets in the Peninsular. The Mutrah Fish Market, a short walk away is famous not just for fish but a beautiful calligraphy-inspired slatted canopy roof.

The Old Town of Nizwa
The landlocked town of Nizwa maintains a strong link to the country’s religious and cultural heritage. The 17th-century Nizwa Fort with its high walls and round watchtower is one of the key highlights. Nearby is the Nizwa Souq where you can buy saffron and Omani halwa as well as traditional silver jewelry.

Oman's Grand Canyon
Jebel Shams in west Oman is the tallest mountain in Oman’s Hajar Mountain range. Climbing up this 3009 m tall mountain offers breathtaking views of the vast desert and rocky terrain. Along the way you can stop at ancient villages nestled in the valleys.

The Striking Bimah Sinkhole
When you book a Oman Tour Package, make sure it includes a trip to the Bimah Sinkhole. Located just off the highway to Sur, this natural marvel is about 20m deep. The crystal-clear turquoise waters are surrounded by jagged limestone rocks and lush vegetation. Stairs lead down to the water from where you can take a dip if you like. If you’re lucky, the fish in the sinkhole may give you a free fish spa treatment!

The Vast Wahiba Sands
This seemingly endless desert is characterized by dunes that shift with the passing winds. As the sand moves, the desert changes colour from deep orange to a golden hue. The gentle sands are the perfect playground for adults wanting to try their hand at dune bashing. Time permitting, you can stay overnight in a Bedouin camp to experience the warm generosity Oman is known for.

The Spectacular Wadis
Oman abounds with beautiful Wadis (valleys) that often fill up with water after the rains. Wadi Bani Awf and Wadi al Madeen are amongst the most visited. The cliffs hide Wadi Bani Awf from the sun keeping it cool so you can stop as frequently as you like to take in the sights. It’s a beautiful but challenging drive. The winding roads of Wadi al Madeen take you to our next stop, Jebel Akhdar.

Oman’s Green Mountain - Jebel Akhdar
Jebel Akhdar gets its moniker from the terraced lands where you’ll be surprised to see not just trees but orchards laden with apricots, walnuts and pomegranates. The area is also famous for its rose bushes and traditional rose-water distilleries. The rose water is used as a scent across Oman and even exported.

The Hidden Villages of Oman
Oman is studded with many picturesque villages with historic significance. Here you’ll see traditional Islamic architecture and be able to experience Omani culture. Stop at the ancient Birkat al Mouz to see Oman’s only Roman-inspired aqueduct. A little to the west are Al Hamra and Misfah Al Abryin with their mud-brick houses. Further north, you’ll reach Nakhal and its historic Nakhal Fort.
